Consent and Transparency

The principles that individuals affected by AI systems should be informed about their use, understand how they work, and have choice in whether to participate.

  • consent
  • transparency
  • disclosure
  • informed choice

Transparency Requirements

Disclose when AI is being used, what it does, key limitations, and how decisions are made. Information should be in plain language, not technical jargon.

Consent

In many contexts, consent is required before using personal data or making consequential decisions. Consent must be informed, voluntary, and specific.

Governance Challenge

Balancing transparency (detailed technical information) with comprehensibility (clear, accessible information) is difficult. Many current transparency efforts fail to inform users adequately.
